Project Utopia breaks the naval architectural mould

The concept of a floating island is not new, having first surfaced in Homer's Odyssey and making countless appearances in literature from Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels, C. S. Lewis' science fiction trilogy Perelandra, Hugh Lofting's The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle(1922) and the first artificially-constructed floating island makes an appearance in an 1895 novel by the father of science fiction, Frenchman Jules Verne.

Project Utopia has more in common with an oil rig than it does with a yacht, and in the word's of the consultancy, "breaks the traditional naval architectural mould which the market has come to expect and offers a truly unique outlook free from any conventional design constraints."

Floating island yet in a fast growing market

The Wally Island was a 99 meter (325 feet) "gigayacht" design that dwarfed the vast majority of luxury megayachts and reconceived the yacht as a floating personal island, a mobile address that can be used as a home, an entertaining space or even a moving exhibition or show space.

It seems that now the naval architectural mold is broken, and has moved outside traditional areas, newer purpose-built, holistic designs have begun to emerge, most notably the work of work of Wally Yachts, Dutch Docklands Maldives and Italian industrial designer Michele Puzzolante.

The initiative is inspired by the idea of creating cities that are free from political agendas and social construction.

Now an Austrian-based company intends to manufacture much smaller, tailor made miniature floating islands, at a fraction of the cost.

Founder Gábor Orsós is aiming to combine the positive aspects of mainland real estate and luxury yachts at much reduced cost, albeit in comparison to superyachts.

Yacht Island Design's "Tropical Island Paradise", is a 90 metre island with a top speed of 15 knots

Designed in conjunction with BMT Nigel Gee, Yacht Island Design's Project Utopia measures some 330 ft (100 m) in length and breadth, spans 11 decks and has the equivalent floorspace of a present-day cruise liner - enough space to create an entire micro-nation.

The SBS2 will be able to float or submerge and as it dives, the pressure at depth against the forces of air would act like a heart and lungs, sustaining the life within the biomes. The central support biome will monitor the life systems from within its own operations facility.

Green Float concept: a carbon negative city on the ocean

The idea of going offshore to satisfy our renewable energy needs isn't new, but the grand vision of Japan’s Shimizu Corporation goes way beyond harnessing green energy at sea for use in cities on Terra firma – it takes the whole city along for the ride. The company, along with the Super Collaborative Graduate School and Nomura Securities, is researching the technical issues involved in constructing its Green Float concept – a self-sufficient, carbon-negative floating city that would reside in the Equatorial Pacific Ocean.

The concept would comprise individual floating cells or districts resembling water lilies with a radius of 1km (0.62 miles) that would form a compact village that could house 10,000 to 50,000 people. Joining these districts together would form a city or module that would be home to 100,000 people, while a group of modules would form a country (though we assume there is some red tape involved before you get a seat at the U.N.).

Observatory Safely Studies Deep-Sea Life

Miles below the ocean’s surface lies one of the most inhospitable habitats on the planet. Deep inside subterranean cracks, where seawater seeps through the perpetually hot rock in Earth’s crust, there’s a surprisingly rich ecosystem of microorganisms. Scientists have long been eager to study these creatures—along with the larger geological setting—but drilling holes in the seafloor large enough to drop instruments down floods the habitat with cold water and kills off the fauna. That’s where a type of rig called a Circulation Obviation Retrofit Kit, or CORK, comes in. Researchers install these observatories in boreholes, with a two-story-tall wellhead that forms a seal to protect the environment below—and a half mile or so of instrumentation

ROV PLATFORM
The CORK can be left in place for 10 years. The observatory is serviced by remotely operated vehicles, which are lowered to its 13-foot-wide platform

Lockheed Martin, Reignwood Group to Cooperate on OTEC Power Plant - USA

Lockheed Martin and Reignwood Group have signed a contract to start design of a 10-megawatt Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) power plant, which, when complete, will be the largest OTEC project to date.

Lockheed Martin is the industry leader in the development of OTEC technology, holding 19 related patents. The Lockheed Martin-Reignwood 10-megawatt plant is considered to be a crucial step in the full commercialization of OTEC.
"The ocean holds enormous potential for terrawatts of clean, baseload energy," said Dan Heller, vice president of new ventures for Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Training. "Capturing this energy through a system like OTEC means we have the opportunity to produce reliable and sustainable power, supporting global security, a strong economic future and climate protection for future generations."
Under this initial contract, Lockheed Martin will provide project management, design and systems engineering services

Trash-filled "Oceanscraper"

Another solution to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch problem might come in the twisted shape of "oceanscrapers" built on underwater landfills, such as the Lady Landfill Skycrapers imagined above by a Serbian design team.

Trash would be collected at the bottoms of the towers and recycled in their cores. The undersea towers would support above-water islands hosting self-sufficient human settlements.

To keep the housing developments above from sinking, the Lady Landfill Skycrapers would take in or release ocean water to counteract the changing amounts of buoyant plastic trash in the hulls.

Plastics no longer needed for flotation would be converted into energy stored in massive batteries for charging island life, the designers say.

Waterscraper

With only its stabilizing floating ring and transparent dome protruding above the sea, the Waterscraper is envisioned as a tubelike underwater residence and lab—all designed to withstand crushing water pressures.

Natural light would filter down from the dome as the Waterscraper drifts from one destination to the next. Beaches, restaurants, a marina, and a dive center would cater to luxury-apartment dwellers and hotel guests.

Concepts like the Waterscraper are being touted as potential solutions to the planet's urban population pressures.

According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, half of humanity currently calls an urban area home. And before we reach 2050, India's cities will grow by 497 million people, China's by 341 million, Nigeria's by 200 million, and the United States' by 103 million.

Green Sea Star

Slated to open in 2014, the Greenstar is to be a floating hotel and conference center off the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. The island nation is the world's lowest-lying country, making it among the most threatened by anticipated climate change-induced sea level rise.

Designed by Waterstudio.NL to blend in with its ocean surroundings, the Greenstar will have room for 800 overnight guests and 2,000 conference attendees.

Intended to be highly efficient, the development's small environmental footprint is a tribute to the country's determination to fight global warming, according to Waterstudio.NL architects. Appropriately enough, organizers intend the Greenstar to be the number one meeting place for global climate change discussions.

Oil Rig Reimagined

The Water Circles concept would convert old oil platforms into water-treatment plants that transform saltwater into fresh water. Remaining fossil fuel extraction infrastructure would be used to channel seawater into the floating desalination plant.

Spherical modules would distill saltwater and store fresh water bound for water-poor countries. The old oil rigs would also house researchers and sustain on-site food production, according to the South Korea-based design team.

A larger-than-life lure, the Plastic Fish Tower would attract plastic instead of marine life in an effort to reduce the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also known as the Eastern Pacific Garbage Patch.

Sprawling in the Pacific between California and Hawaii, this vast mass of mostly tiny bits of the world's plastic debris is twice the size of Texas. Ocean currents pick up millions of tons of discarded plastic and other trash, forming the garbage vortex.

World’s first floating nuclear power plant to begin operating in Russia in 2016

In three years, Russia will have the world’s first floating nuclear power plant, capable of providing energy and heat to hard-to-get areas as well as drinking water to arid regions.

The unique vessel should be operational by 2016, the general director of Russia’s biggest shipbuilders, the Baltic Plant, Aleksandr Voznesensky told reporters at the 6th International Naval Show in St. Petersburg.

The Akademik Lomonosov is to become the spearhead of a series of floating nuclear power plants, which Russia plans to put into mass-production.

The floating power-generating unit, aimed at providing energy to large industrial enterprises, port cities and offshore gas and oil-extracting platforms, was designed on the basis of nuclear reactors which are equipped on the icebreakers ships. The technology has proved itself for over 50 years of successful operation in extreme Arctic conditions.

The floating power plant is a vessel with a displacement of 21,500 tons and a crew of 69 people. It’s non-self-propelled and therefore has to be towed to the desired destination

LILYPAD : A Shelter For Climate Change by Vincent Callebaut

There are only a few municipal design keys that refer lodging the unavoidable rush of dislocated individuals that possibly will come up as oceans increase under global warming. The Lilypad presented Vincent Callebaut, is a thought for a fully self-reliant floating city aimed to afford protection for upcoming climate variation immigrants. The aim of the idea itself is creditable, but it is Callebaut’s extraordinary model that has caught our mind

 The Articulating Joint

There is no element of the system that has not already been deployed in an operating system of one type or another. The most unique component is the articulating connection detail between the buoys and the topside (or the “joint”), which has been subjected to US Coast Guard and Class Society review and approval through the deployment of the Versabar twin-gantry marine heavy lift vessels the VB-4,000 and VB-10,000.

The VB-10,000 incorporates two 5,000-ton capacity joints, similar to the size required for a typical Versabuoy platform.  The joint design has been subjected to over 5 years of operating service on the VB-4,000 and VB-10,000 vessels. The design includes a double joint configuration which provides 100% load path redundancy, in turn allowing the removal, inspection and replacement of any component of the wear surface while in-service.

example of a fully redundant articulating connection. The main wear surfaces and support pins within the connections currently in service on the lift vessels are removed for inspection on an annual basis. The synthetic bushing material used on the key wear surfaces has an excellent operating history, with no replacement yet required,  and is a true “plug and play” material, requiring no maintenance or lubrication during service

CALM Buoy

General information
Ever since the early days of the offshore industry, the Catenary Anchor Leg Mooring (CALM) buoy has been a succesfull system for importing and exporting of oil. Initially, these buoys were moored in relatively shallow water at near shore locations, often in very harsh wave conditions. In recent years the use of CALM buoys for offloading crude oil from FPSOs in deep water, for example at a number of West of Africa oil fields, is becoming more and more common.

Here, the environmental conditions are more mild, but the water depth is a complicating factor

Deep Ocean Gas Storage - DOGS

Deep Ocean Gas Storage (DOGS) is a method for storing the gas on the seafloor, using a simple pressure equalized gas storage device that is similar in nature to the Multi Column Floater ballast tanks. They are anchored using gravity (fixed ballast) or vertically loaded anchors. Options can be built into the system for discharge and hydrate prevention. The gas is stored and then offloaded to either a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) tanker or an LNG tanker

Engineers race to design world's biggest offshore wind turbines

British firm to design mammoth offshore wind turbines with 275m wingspan that produce three times power of standard models

British, American and Norwegian engineers are in a race to design and build the holy grail of wind turbines – giant, 10MW offshore machines twice the size and power of anything seen before – that could transform the global energy market because of their economies of scale.

Today, a revolutionary British design that mimics a spinning sycamore leaf and which was inspired by floating oil platform technology, entered the race. Leading engineering firm Arup is to work with an academic consortium backed by blue-chip companies including Rolls Royce, Shell and BP to create detailed designs for the "Aerogenerator", a machine that rotates on its axis and would stretch nearly 275m from blade tip to tip. It is thought that the first machines will be built in 2013-14 following two years of testing

The market for offshore power is expected to grow to hundreds of billions of dollars a year. Last year the European Wind Energy Association predicted that Europe would increase its offshore wind power from less than 2GW today to more than 150GW by 2030

New platform enables dry tree technology for marginal fields

Versabar Inc
.

An innovative floating platform technology is now available that represents a new class of deepwater development systems. The new Versabuoy technology responds to wave loading in a fundamentally different way when compared to existing technologies, which results in different performance characteristics. Yet, although the floating platform technology is "new," it is achieved through a unique arrangement of existing components and hardware, all with established performance track records.

The VB-10,000 incorporates two 5,000-ton capacity joints

For the new platform, the conventional open truss configured topsides is supported by four independent buoys. Each buoy is connected to the topsides by an articulating connection, which decouples the buoy pitch and roll motions from the topsides and from each other. Each buoy is intrinsically stable and has a GM value (metacentric height) typically in the range of 25 to 50 ft (8 to 15 m). Below the water line, the buoys have no connections between them. The taut leg mooring lines and catenary risers attach directly to the deck, facilitating installation, and in-service inspection and maintenance.
